Let this new app immerse you in the work of Hon Lai-chu, dubbed “Hong Kong’s Kafka.”

From the creators of The Apartment Block…
We present our latest project: The Kite Family.

This app brings Hon Lai-chu’s wildly creative work to life with an interactive excerpt from her new book, The Kite Family. In the title story, a young girl struggles to rise above her family’s cruel fate — as her relatives’ surreal obesity increases, so does their outlandish behavior.

Bonus feature: We take you inside this translated story — when you tap-and-hold on any section of the English text, it reveals Hons original Chinese.

Hon Lai-chu is one of Hong Kong’s most acclaimed young writers. The original Chinese version of the Kite Family won the Unitas New Writers Novella first prize, was named one of the top ten Chinese novels worldwide, and was awarded a translation grant from the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts.

The Kite Family is translated from the original Chinese by Andrea Lingenfelter. Illustrations by Ho Sin Tung.
